Chapter 19 Tree Preservation Ordinance

Upon request, the Sea Girt Ordinance Review Committee (SGORC) was requested to review many of the Borough’s Land Use ordinances and requirements. Tree Preservation was also added to their list as it has become a topic of high interest within the Borough. The draft of the introduced amended ordinance was vetted, edited and submitted for Council approval by the Environmental Committee and Borough Administration.

Here is a brief of the updates proposed by the SGORC/Borough Administration:

  • Private residents/property owners will have the ability to remove a tree on their property without a permit when construction is NOT proposed. Currently, any tree to be removed requires a permit
  • Tree replacement requirements and/or financial requirements have been increased. The current ordinance requires “Down 2, Up 1” for replacements, or $500 for each tree removed
  • Funds received are now to be placed directly into a Borough Trust account for plantings, trimmings, and/or use of the Shade Tree Commission, where currently there is nothing dictating where received funds are to be utilized.
  • Prohibits cutting or dropping of trees into the public street
  • Revisions prohibit the issuance of final approvals to a property unless the tree permit conditions (replantings or payments) have been received
  • Revisions further define what is needed for a tree removal permit and where a tree removal permit is required
